Mustard harvesting going on in Manikganj

The harvesting of mustard in the district is going on in full swing as the cultivators have achieved bumper production in the current season due to favourable weather, officials said. Bumper production and its fair prices during last several years, the farmers of seven upazilas of the district have been spreading the areas of mustard cultivation every year.
Easy cultivation and harvesting process and lower production cost is also a reason behind the popularity of mustard cultivation in the areas, the sources added.
Md. Alauddin, one of the mustard cultivators of Nabogram village under Sadar Upazila that after harvesting the Aman, they cultivated mustard in their lands and after harvesting the mustard they would cultivate on the same land their main Boro crop.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said, a total of 38500 hectares of land was brought under mustard cultivation in all seven upazilas of the district during the current season with a production target of 50050
metric tons of mustard. The sources said, The cultivators are happy to get maximum production as government ensured the necessary supply of seeds, fertilizers and other inputs in the right time.
Field Day on Bari-14, one of the high yielding varieties of the mustard was held on February, 5 at Boika village under Balla Union of Harirampur Upazila.
Bibhuti Bhushan Sarker, Additional Director, DAE , Dhaka Region was present in the programme as the chief guest while Abu Mohammad Enayet Ullah, Deputy Director, DAE, Manikganj, Zahirul Huq, Harirampur Upazila Agriculture Officer, Sanaullah Shikder, Sub-Assistant Upazila Agriculture Officer Harirampur and other officials of the department were present at the programme.
The chief guest advised the farmers to cultivate BARI-14 mustard as it is a high yielding and short period variety.
“The farmers can get maximum production cultivating this kind of mustard, ” he said adding that the farmers can get 1400 to 1600 kilogram mustard from one hectare of land from 75 to 80 days.
After harvesting BARI-14, farmers easily can cultivate Boro on the same lands, he added.
Deputy Director of DAE Enayet Ullah said the government has taken various programmes to increase the production of oil in the country to meet the demand and to make the cultivators self reliant.
Large number of farmers of the areas was present on this occasion.
