UNB, Jamalpur :A man accused of his wife’s murder allegedly committed suicide in police custody in Sarishabari Police Station early Monday.The deceased was identified as Abul Hashem, 35, son of late Zinnat Ali, a resident of Tariapara village of the upazila. He was accused of the murder of his wife. Billal Uddin, officer-in-charge of the police station, said police arrested Hashem on Sunday in connection with murder of his wife.Hashem attempted to commit suicide in the police station around 4.45am and was injured himself critically.Later he was rushed to the upazila health complexwhere doctor declared him dead. Victim’s mother Hashu Begum claimed that Hashem was tortured to death in police custody.Following the death, locals staged demonstration in front of the police station.They also blocked Sarishabari-Jamalpur road which halted vehicular movement for two hours.With the interference of local politicians, police brought the situation under control.
