Marking the 94th birth anniversary of Shaheed Prof. Munier Chowdhury, also known as the father of modern drama in our country, popular drama troupe ‘Theatre’ conferred ‘Munier Chowdhury Award’ and ‘Mohammad Zakaria Memorial Award’ on November 27 at the Experimental Theatre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Segunbagicha in the city. This year, Professor Shafi Ahmed received the ‘Munier Chowdhury Award’ while actor, scriptwriter and director Shishir Rahman recieved the ‘Mohammad Zakaria Memorial Award’.
Eminent Educationist Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury was the Chief Guest at the programme which was chaired by President of ‘Theatre’ Ferdausi Majumdar. At the second part- Munier Chowdhury’s two one-act plays were performed by the artistes of ‘Theatre’. The plays were directed by Khurshid Alam and Tanjum Ara Polly.
Sponsored by IFIC Bank, The Munier Chowdhury award carries taka fifty thousand and Mohammad Zakaria Memorial Award carries taka twenty five thousand as cash reward.
 Since the inception of the award in 1989, Munier Chowdhury award has been given to Mohammad Zakaria, Amalendu Biswas (Posthumously), Abdullah Al-Mamun, Nagorik Natto Somproday, Syed Jamil Ahmed, Ramendu Majumdar, Muktodhara, Sayeed Ahmed, Ferdausi Majumdar, Syed Shamsul Haq, Ataur Rahman, Mamunur Rashid, Nasiruddin Yousuff, Selim Al-Deen, Aly Zaker, Nikhil Sen, Asaduzzaman Noor, Zia Haidar, Moloy Bhowmick, Partho Protim Majumdar, Abdus Selim, Monoj Mitra, Aronnok Natto Dol, Liaquat Ali Lucky, Mrittika Chakma, M. Hamid, Keramat Mowla, Ishrafeel Shaheen and Devjit Bandyopadhyay.
