BSS, Dhaka :
The government will build multi- storied apartments in the abandoned properties in Gulshan, Banani and Dhanmandi to accommodate government officials, Minister for Housing and Public Works’ Engineer Mosharraf Hossain said here.
Analyzing the reasons behind the decision, he said, “There is a severe housing crisis for government officials in the city. Only seven per cent of them enjoy government housing. That is why we will build these houses. They will be built by private construction companies through the public works’ department of the government.”
The Minister was speaking as the chief guest at the concluding session of the ‘Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB) fair-2014’ at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center, yesterday.
He said, apartment complexes will be built in the abandoned properties in other areas of the city, too and the flats will be sold to the general people.
Explaining the government’s urban policy, he said “planned urban development is taking place across the country to ensure that all people enjoy urban facilities. The areas will have all urban amenities”, he added.
Detailing out further, he said, “The National Housing Authority will build the planned housing estates in all upazilas of the country.
This will ensure that henceforth people will not have to come to Dhaka to get urban amenities.
Currently , the National Housing Authority has 46 housing projects”, he said.
Explaining the government’s current position on the Detailed Area Plan (DAP), he said that the committee is being reconstituted for its modification. Through its modification it will be made more realistic.
Refuting charges that the modification of DAP is endorsement for filling up wetlands, he said that approval will only be given to build keeping wetlands intact.
Referring to the problems faced by the real estate sector, he said that the government is aware of them and they will be addressed, gradually.
He also emphasized that along with the government REHAB, too, has to come forward, sincerely.
