Staff Reporter :
A group of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Thursday said that the Jatiya Muktijoddha Council had taken the decision illegally to revoke the gallantry title ‘Bir Uttam’ awarded by the State to former President Ziaur Rahman.
Bir Uttam is the second highest award in Bangladesh for individual gallantry.
In a press conference, the leaders also hoped that the concerned authorities would cancel the ‘vile and
vindictive’ decision of revoking the gallantry award of Bir Uttam’ which was given to Ziaur Rahman as recognition of his outstanding contribution during the liberation war in 1971.
Supreme Court Bar Association Secretary Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal read out a written statement in the press conference held on the Supreme Court premises.
Vice-president Advocate Md Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan and treasurer Barrister Raghib Rouf Chowdhury, among others, were present on the occasion.
Jatiya Muktijoddha Council has decided to revoke the gallantry title ‘Bir Uttam’ awarded by the state to Ziaur Rahman when the country is set to celebrate golden jubilee of the Liberation War this year.
The national platform of the Freedom Fighters has also proposed to revoke the gallantry titles awarded to Shariful Haque Dalim, Nur Chowdhury, Rashed Chowdhury and Mosleh Uddin, who took port in the killing of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman under whose Presidents Ziaur Rahman got the gallantry.
