Mujahid’s appeal hearing now on May 4

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned the appeal hearing of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid against his death sentence till May 4.
The four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha started the hearing at around 9:45am.
Defence counsel Advocate SM Shahjahan placed submission for Mujahid on the first day.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 awarded death sentence to Mujahid on July 17, 2013 as the allegations of crimes against the Jamaat leader were proved beyond doubt.
Mujahid, Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami, filed the appeal with the apex court against the tribunal’s verdict on August 11 the same year, claiming his innocence and seeking acquittal of the charges.
The tribunal convicted Mujahid in five charges out of seven allegations. He was given death penalty in three charges. According to the tribunal’s verdict, he directly took part in the killings against the innocent Bangladeshis in 1971.
Mujahid was an Al Badr commander and a top leader of Islami Chhatra Sangha, the then student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami during the War of Independence in 1971.
He was also a minister of the BNP-led four-party alliance government from 2001 to 2006.
