Staff Reporter :
Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Thursday turned down a proposal of devaluation of taka against US dollar, saying the government has no plan to change the current currency policy.
“The value of taka is determined by the market and there is no plan to change policy,” said Muhith after dismissing businesses proposal in this regard.
“We may look into other proposals but not go for currency devaluation,” he added.
A business delegation led by BGMEA President met the minister at his secretariat office yesterday and placed several proposals to boost the country’s export sector.
The currency devaluation was one of the proposals.
Exporters have long been lobbying for a cheaper currency to promote export. It means more taka for a dollar.
President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) M Siddiqur Rahman confirmed that they had discussed the devaluation of taka with the minister. But he did not favour this particular proposal.
“The minister gave a patience hearing to our other proposals and assured us he would consider other issues,” he added. “A taka devaluation is required to boost our export. So, we raise the matter to the finance minister,” he added.
