Banned Harkat-ul-Jihad (HuJI) Chief Mufti Abdul Hannan and his two associates named Delwar alias Ripon and Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul were buried yesterday in their respective districts.
They were hanged on Wednesday night for charging grenade on the former British High Commissioner in Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury in 2004 resulting in the death of three persons and injuries to many including the High Commissioner.
Mufti Hannan was buried at his village home in Gopalganj district while his two associates in Chandpur and Moulvibazar districts respectively.
In Gopalganj, Hannan was buried at his family graveyard after a Namaj-e-Janaza at Hiron Bala Girls’ Madrasha and Orphanage premises around 5:45 am. Mufti Hannan’s brother Munshi Aliuzzaman conducted the Namaj-e-Janaza, said our local correspondent.
An ambulance carrying the body of the executed HuJI Chief arrived at the village around 5:20am amid tight security. Kotalipara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zilal Hossain, Executive Magistrate Mahbub Jamil and Officer-in-Charge of Kotalipara Police Station Quamrul Faruk were present during the burial.
Thirty-one of Hannan’s close family members attended the prayers, said OC Kamrul. Besides, Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul was buried at his family graveyard around 4:30am at Moishadi village in Sadar Upazila of Chandpur district. Bipul’s father Hemayet Uddin received the body and a Namaj-e-Janaza was held near the graveyard with participation of Bipul’s family and relatives.
On the other hand, Delwar alias Ripon, another associate of Mufti Hannan, was buried at his village home after a Namaz-e-Janaza at Konagaon Shahi Eidgah Maidan in Kulaura Upazila of Moulvibazar district early Thursday.
Konagaon Jame-Masjid Imam Ibrahim Ali conducted the Namaj-e-Janaza around 12:15 am. An ambulance carrying Ripon’s body reached his village around 12:00 am, said Kulaura Police Station OC Shamsuddoha.
Bipul obtained his BA degree from the Sylhet’s MC College, said Bipul’s father. He is survived by his wife and 9-year old son. On Wednesday night, Mufti Abdul Hannan and his associates — Delwar alias Ripon and Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul — were hanged over the grenade attack on ex-British envoy Anwar Choudhury in Sylhet in 2004.
Of them, Mufti Hannan and Bipul were executed at Kashimpur Central Jail at 10:01pm while Ripon at Sylhet Central Jail at the same time.
The three militants were hanged after the President dismissed their mercy petitions.
