Tax evasion: MP Harun gets bail for 6 months

The High Court on Monday granted bail to BNP MP Harunur Rashid for six months in a case filed on charge of tax
evasion while importing a luxury car. The High Court bench of Justice Md Shawkat Hossain passed the order after admitting his appeal filed challenging a lower court verdict that sentenced him to five years’ imprisonment in the case.
Earlier on Sunday MP Harun filed the appeal petition with the High Court where he claimed that he is innocent and urged the High Court to grant him bail and acquit him of the case.
Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan and Syed Mizanur Rahman appeared in the court on behalf of the BNP MP while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan said, “The High Court granted him bail for six months after admitting his appeal against the trail court sentence considering that he already have served jail for one year and three months. At the same time, the court stayed the fine of Tk 50 lakh imposed on him by the trail court.
The ACC lawyer said that they will file leave to appeal petition against the HC order granting him bail in the case.
Judge of the Special Judge Court-4 of Dhaka, Sheikh Nazmul Alam, on October 21 sentenced Harunur Rashid, BNP lawmaker from Chapainawabganj-3 constituency, to five years’ imprisonment in the case. The court fined him Tk 50 lakh, in default, to suffer six months more imprisonment.
Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case with the Tejgaon Police Station on March 17 in 2007 against Harun and two others on charge of tax evasion while importing a luxury car during the tenure of four-party alliance government led by BNP.
