A Jatiya Party MP has staged a highway blockade in protest against an Awami League MP’s repeated laying of project foundation stones in his constituency.
Brahmanbaria-2 MP Ziaul Haque Mridha, a central party leader, led his supporters to block the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway at Ashuganj’s Kutapara on Thursday.
“Brahmanbaria-3 MP Rabiul Alam Mohammad Muktadir Chowdhury keeps coming to my area to illegally interfere in and hamper my work,” Mridha told reporters during the protest. “He provocatively keeps laying foundation stones in various places.”
Ruling party MP Muktadir has also insulted the Jatiya Party’s leadership, alleged Mridha, saying it “impedes the process to have a unified government.”
The Jatiya Party leader had initially planned a human chain along the Dhaka-Sylhet highway but police frustrated his plans.
Mridha then led his supporters to block the highway. He stopped traffic for half an hour. The blockade was lifted following requests by the police.
The protesters then formed a human chain and demanded that central leaders of the Awami League intervene to stop Muktadir’s forays. He threatened to resume his agitation if no action was taken.
