Movement of all kinds of vehicles and even the passers-by on the Bailey bridge that constructed over the Bhairab River long ago to connect Mulghar Union with Fakirhat Upazila headquarters was suspended and barricaded on its both sides with erecting iron-fencings by the Roads and Highways Department of Bagerhat on December 12, 2021. As a result, sufferings of thousands of villagers of the Union (Mulghar) know no bounds. Now they are to cross more than one kilometer extra path (for noting) to go to Fakirhat Upazila headquarters where all offices of Upazila level such as Upazila Parishad, Police Station, Upazila Health Complex, Sub-registrar’s office, Live-stock office, 2 colleges, one Girls’ High School, banks the main Bazar etc. On the other hand, one Govt. Boys’ High School, one Govt. Girls’ High School and an orphanage are situated at Mulghar village. So both boys and girls of Fakirhat headquarters are also to cross more than one kilometer extra path to attend the 2 Govt. High Schools and the orphanage.
It is reported that the still Bailey bridge was constructed over the river Bhairab more than long 3 decades ago to shorten the distance between Fakirhat Upazila head quarters and Mulghar village as well as Mulghar Union Parishad. Every day thousand of people of Mulghar union and its adjacent areas are to go to Fakirhat headquarters for innumerable purposes.
Not only that but also the people of the union (Mulghar) and its adjacent villages are to use this bridge in order to go to district headquarters Bagerhat and divisional and industrial city of Khulna or else where. It has now become very old, unfit and risky for the movement of all kinds of vehicles and passers-by for want of regular and proper repairing works.
It was occasionally repaired by the concerned department, but that was not lasting. So, it is a long felt demand of the suffering people that it should be replaced immediately with the constructing a concrete bridge. But that was not materialized so far. Locals told, the existing Bailey bridge was repaired not as per the scheduled.
They alleged, the steel sheets and frame used in the bridge already got rusts and became unfit for movment of vehicles and passers-by by this time. As a result, a strong resentment was created among the localities. They blamed the concerned authorities for all those. Now the localities are strongly demanding for the immediate repairing of it properly and as per scheduled in order to eliminate their sufferings without any delay.
In this connection UNO of Fakirhat told, I already talked with the concerned authorities about the repairing of the Bailey bridge. It has now become totally unfit and risky. So, the movement of vehicles and passers-by on the bridge was banned. She continued, allocation of the money for its repairing works was already sanctioned and the repairing work will start very soon.
