Left and progressive political leaders on Wednesday warned the government that they will go for a tougher movement if the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) increases gas tariff.
Addressing a sit-in programme in front of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) at capital’s Karwanbazar from 10:00am to 1:00pm, leaders of different left parties also demanded reduction of the gas price instead of increasing.
BERC has proposed 20 percent increase in both two and single-burners stove in residential sector, which is now Tk 650 and 600 respectively.
The price of Compressed Natural Gas for vehicles could see a hike up to Tk 40 per cubic metre, which is now Tk 32.
President of Communist Party of Bangladesh Mujahidul Islam Selim accused the government of showing an anti-people attitude by frequently raising the prices of gas and other utility services.
General Secretary of Socialist Party of Bangladesh Khalequzzaman said, the consequence of illogically increasing the prices of gas and other utility services would not be good for the government.
Zonayed Saki, Chief Coordinator of Ganasanghati Andolan, said if the government increases the prices of gas, it would badly affect all the sectors of the country from agriculture to industrial production.
Syed Abul Maksud, energy expert Prof M Shamsul Alam, CPB central leader Ruhin Hossain Prince and Biplabi Worker’s Party general secretary Saiful Haque, among others, spoke at the programme.
Expressing their concern over the government’s move to hike gas tariff, the speakers urged the government to refrain from taking such an ‘anti-people move’.
