National Committee for Saving the Sundarbans (NCSS) on Tuesday vowed to continue its movement unless the government backtracks from its decision to install the coal-fired power plant at Rampal.
“We would intensify our movement in a bid to protect the world’s largest mangrove forest,” said NCSS Convener Sultana Kamal while speaking at a press conference in the city yesterday.
The NCSS organised the briefing at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity three days after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arranged a press conference on Rampal power plant at Ganabhaban. Sultana Kamal, also a former adviser to the caretaker government, hoped that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would scrap the Rampal power plant project considering the country’s interest.
She said government’s propaganda about the Rampal power plant project is misleading the people. Regarding the BNP’s support to the movement, she said they have no connection with the party regarding the movement.
“Every government has tried to show that any criticism of their activities is a conspiracy and politically motivated,” she said.
But the successful movements in Kansat and Phulbari had proved that such types of blames are false, she added.
Sultana Kamal said that the victory of the movement to save the Sundarbans will prove that any unacceptable project cannot be imposed by force and it will never be successful.
Professor MM Akash of Dhaka University and Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers’ Association (BELA) Chief Executive Syeda Rizwana Hasan also attended the press conference.
