A Magura court has granted police two days to question five over the shooting during a factional clash of ruling Awami League which left one dead and a baby in her mother’s womb with bullet wounds.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Imtiazul Haque gave the order on Wednesday based on a plea by the case’s investigation officer Detective Branch OC Imadul Haque.
The police officer pleaded with the court for five days to question ‘Farid’, ‘Sagar’ and ‘Liton’, and three days to question ‘Ilias’ and his son Sohel Rana. On July 23, a clash broke out
between Magura Juba League activist Kamrul Bhuiyan’s supporters and followers of former Juba League activists Mohammad Ali and ‘Ajibor’ at Doarpara over dominance on the extortion and narcotics trade in the area.
Kamrul’s uncle Abdul Momin was killed in the shooting and another neighbour was injured. ‘Rubel’, son of Momin, filed a case over the incident on July 26.
Najma Begum was caught in the crossfire and shot in her stomach. She was eight months into her pregnancy at the time. Doctors in Magura performed surgeries on Begum to save her child at that night.
The infant was transferred to the DMCH two days later and was kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for 24 days until she was shifted to the regular ward with her mother.
They were released on Aug 20 and returned home on the next day. Of the 16 accused in the case, 11 have been arrested. Ajibor was killed in an alleged ‘shootout’ with police. Four including the case’s second accused Mohammad Ali is still absconding.
