UNB, Dhaka :
Four districts including Dhaka are likely to see improvement in electricity transmission and supply within the next two years, as the state-owned Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) has moved to set up new substations and expand the capacity of some existing ones.
Under the move, two new 132/33 kV grid substations will be set up-one in Nababganj in Dhaka district, and another in Srinagar of Munshiganj. Meanwhile the capacity of existing substations of 33 kV in Jhenidah and Magura districts will be extended to 132 kV. The PGCB on Monday struck a deal with a Bangladeshi-South Korean consortium to this effect for implementation. The Energypac-Daewoo consortium will complete the work in the next two years on turnkey basis at a cost of Tk 131 crore. World Bank, Bangladesh government and PGCB are jointly financing the project titled “Enhancement of Capacity of Grid Substation and Transmission Lines for Rural Electrification (ECGSTL).”
At present, some districts and upazilas have been experiencing frequent load-shedding and low voltage due to poor transmission and distribution (T and D) infrastructure.
Following the signing of the deal, PGCB Project Director Mohammad Shahid said that the new grid substations and expanded existing ones will target improving T and D in these areas specifically, and eventually play a vital role in their development. He also said that adjoining areas would be benefited as load capacity will be improved immensely and stabilize the grid system. “It will lead to increased reliability in the overall power supply system,” he said. PGCB Company Secretary Md Ashraf Hossain and EnergyPac-Daewoo Consortium’s SM Aminul Haque and Jo-il Jeon signed the contract on behalf of their respective sides.
PGCB Managing Director Masum Al-Beruni, Executive Director (P&D) Chowdhury Alamgir Hossain, Emdadul Islam, Mohammad Shahidullah, Paresh Chandra Ray and EnergyPac CEO Rabiul Alam were present on the occasion.
