Dinajpur temple attack: Motive yet unknown

The investigators are yet to unearth the motive behind the Thursday night’s incident of gun and bomb attack at a temple in Dinajpur that left at least six persons injured.
Police on Friday detained one person named Mozammel Haque, 28, a resident of Lalmonirhat in connection with the temple attack, raising the number of arrestees to two.
Mozammel tried to flee away by firing shots from his revolver, but failed being cordoned by local people. He was severely beaten by the police at that time. Police later recovered 28 bullets along with the revolver from his possession.
A villager named Rafiqul Islam received bullet in his body during indiscriminate firing of Mozammel. He was admitted to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital for treatment. Police sources said Mozammel is a student of private CIT Polytechnic College in Rangpur.
When contacted, Additional Superintendent of Police [crime] in Dinajpur Mohammad Mizanur Rahman told The New Nation last night that the police were dark about the motive of attack.
“We still do not know anything who had conducted the gun and bomb attack and for what? We are trying to unearth the motive. So far we assume, the incident was occurred with an intension to create anarchy,” Mizanur Rahman said.
He said, “The local people surrounded the area and informed police when they saw suspicious movement of a youth [Mozammel ] in Shingra Shalbagan area, in the morning. Mozammel fired several gunshots to make way for his escape, leaving one injured. But he was caught.”
Earlier just after the attack on Thursday night, the local people caught one of the attackers named Shariful Islam, son of Shawkat Ali of Palashbari upzila in Gaibandha district, after a brief chase while he was trying to escape the scene. He is a student of local private polytechnic College.
About the progress of investigation, Officer-in-Charge [Investigation] of Birganj Police Station Md Fakhrul Islam on Friday night said, “We are trying to know the fact for what the attack was made at the temple. The detainees haven’t yet opened their mouths. We so far suspect that the temple was attacked as a part of sabotage.”
“A case has been filed with the concerned police station in this connection. We will pray to the court for remand of the detainees on Saturday morning. Hope, we will be able to extract vital information during remand period,” the OC said. Meanwhile, demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the attackers, the people of the Hindu community on Friday formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka and Dinajpur Press Club protesting the Thursday’s attack.
Thursday night’s temple attack triggered panic among the Hindus in the area as it comes just five days after the bomb attack at Kantaji temple in the same upazila.
It was second incident of armed attack in a span of only five days where six people were injured in a bomb attack at Rash Mela in front of Kantaji Temple in Kaharol upazila of Dinajpur on December 5.
Earlier, a priest of ISCON Birendranath Roy was shot at Ranibandar village of Chirirbandar upazila in Dinajpur on November 30 while criminals shot Piero Parolari, 67, an Italian doctor and priest, in Mirzapur area of Dinajpur town on November 19.
The assailants conducted attack on ISCON temple at Joynanda Dahachi village under Kaharol upzila at about 8:00pm on Thursday when the devotees were engaged in a religious discussion.
Two devotees received bullet wounds at that time. They are Ranjit Chandra Roy, 45, and Mithun Chandra Roy, 25. Of them, Mithun was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
Deputy Commissioner of Dinajpur Khairul Alam yesterday visited the spot. “We hope, the mystery behind the attack will be unearthed after the rest of the gang members are arrested,” the DC said.
