A mother and her son among three people were electrocuted at Khastabak village in Patharghata upazila of Barguna district on Monday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Hamida Begum, 35, her son Md Russel, 14, and brother-in-law Md Delwar Hossain, 65.
Kakchira Union Parishad Member Md Badal Pahlan said that a live wire fell on Delwar when he was cutting a betel nut tree beside an electricity line. Russel and his mother died when they tried to save Delwar.
Md Abul Bashar, Palli Bidyut’s line technician, said hat they went to cut a betel nut tree beside a 240V electric line without informing them.
Quoting local sources, Kakchira Union Parishad Chairman Alauddin Poltu, said, “Delwar used to secure an areca palm tree near his house with an electrocuted wire to prevent theft. On early Monday, he went to the spot to repair the wire and got electrocuted.”
“Russel also got electrocuted as he went to rescue him. Hearing Russel’s screams, Hamida went to the spot and attempted to rescue the two, but got electrocuted as well.”
Later, locals approached the scene and found the trio dead on the spot.
