Sarwar Hossain, a most wanted criminal of Chattogram, was arrested from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka on Saturday morning.
Immigration police arrested the notorious cadre of Islami Chhatra Shibir and second in command of Sazzad Bahini after he landed at the airport by a flight from Qatar.
Sarwar was later handed over to the Chattogram police.
Chattogram police in a drive on Sunday morning recovered an AK-22 rifle, two locally made firearms and 30 rounds of bullet besides Sarwar’s Khondokarbad residence in the port city.
Sarwar, son of Abdul Kader, is accused of at least 15 cases, including murder, extortion and arms smuggling, filed in various police stations in Chattogram.
Officer-in-Charge of Bayazid Bostamy Police Station Priton Sarkar said, “Sarwar was taken to Chattogram on Saturday night after his arrest. After interrogation, law enforcers conducted the drive in his residence and recovered the arms.
Quoting police, our Chattogram correspondent reported that Sazzad’s accomplishes Sarwar and Maxon established the reign of terror at Sholo Shahar, Hathazari, Bahaddarhat and Chandgaon areas with the blessing of Islami Chhatra Shibir. Sarwar was the close accomplice of top cadre of Islami Chhatra Shibir Sazzad Ali Khan alias killer Sazzad, who escaped to Dubai after a Chattogram court awarded him death sentence in the Bahaddarhat eight murder case.
Nasir, a notorious criminal of Chattogram, his close associate Sazzad and their armed accomplices gunned down eight Chhatra League activists by brushfire on July 12, 2000.
Top Shibir cadre Nasir and his accomplices brutally gunned down principal Gopal Krishna Muhury storming his house in November 2001. A Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced him death penalty in abstentia.
They killed Saiful, another Chhatra Shibir cadre, and two of his brothers at Baluchara area in June 2004.
Nasir is accused of at least 20 other criminal cases including sensational ‘eight-murder’ and ‘triple murder’ cases.
They were later sentenced in this case. But Sajjad, who was released on bail when BNP was in power and later fled Dubai.
Sarwar was arrested with AK-47 rifle and five other firearms in Brahmanbaria on July 6, 2011. Police also arrested his associate Nurunnabi and Maxon at that time.
“But he was released on bail and fled to the Middle East after six years in prison,” added Priton Sarkar.
However, it was alleged that followers of Sazzad Bahini were extorting from the port city though their bosses had fled the Middle East. In particular, Sarwar and Maxon were demanding extortion from businessme through calls from the Middle East.
