Anti-rape protest continues across the country for seventh consecutive day

Protests including demonstrations and forming human chains against the ongoing rape incidents, sexual harassment and violence against women continued across the country for the seventh consecutive day on Sunday demanding exemplary punishments for culprits and their patrons.
At Motijheel, About 300 hundred students of the city’s top two institutions took to the street at Shapla Chattar intersection area around 1:30pm on Sunday and demonstrated after building barricades on the road, said Motijheel police OC Monir Hossain Mollah,
During the protest, Students of Motijheel High School and College and Ideal School and College have demanded the highest punishment for those who were involved with raping and torturing of women and children.
Vehicular movement on roads towards Dainik Bangla, Arambagh and Ittefaq intersection from the capital’s business hub remained suspended for nearly three hours during the protest.
At that time students also shouted various slogans amid rain after blocking the road.
Protesters, however, called off the demonstration for the day and left the area around 4pm, Dhaka Metropolitan
Police’s Motijheel Division Additional Deputy Commissioner Enamul Haque Mithu said.
Another protest was held near the Secretariat as part of the siege of the Home Ministry over the recent rape incidents.
Gonosonghoti Andolon staged protest near the Secretariat Gate adjacent to the National Press Club with representatives of likeminded political parties.
Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Convener of Citizens’ Unity, Nurul Haque Nur, former VP of Daksh and others spoke among others.
Protesters also blamed the country’s law enforcers’ agency for the sorrows.
However, Jonaid Saki, Chief Coordinator of Gonosonghoti Andolon could not speak, as the program was shortened due to rain.

In Rajshahi, hundreds of students brought out an anti-rape and violence against women cycle rally in Rajshahi city on Sunday demanding highest punishments for rapists.
The rally started from Shaheed AHM Kamaruzzaman Chattar around 9 am on Sunday.
Similar protests were also reported from Barishal, Dinajpur, Bramanbaria Khulna, and others districts.
Waves of anti-rape demonstrations have arisen across the country after a video footage showing five men gang-raping a housewife, stripping her naked and filming the video of the incident in Begumganj upazila of Noakhali, went viral on social media recently.
The incident occurred in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila at Joykrishnapur village of Eklashpur union on September 2.
Earlier, the housewife of Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila was molested by some local miscreants at Ward No. 9 of Eklashpur Union of the upazila last month and a video of the barbaric incident went viral on the internet.
