Mosquitoes are increasing alarmingly on Rajshahi University campus because of a poor drainage system, decaying garbage and the reluctance to use dustbins.
Swarms of mosquitoes are making life miserable for students, teachers and officials on the campus. The dining halls and canteens of on the campus are contributing to spread of a foul smell, which, along with the dumped garbage, is aiding to the multiplication of mosquitoes. Students of residential hall are facing the sting. They finish the jpb of setting mosquito nets in the evening and have to continue study inside those nets.
Due to absence of sufficient number of dustbins, garbage are pilling of next to academic and residential buildings. Waste water is stagnating because of garbage. All these are creating fertile breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
University authorities say it is the duty of Rajshahi City Corporation to clean up the mess as RU falls within the purview of within the purview of city corporation.
Students are passing days in fear of mosquito-carried diseases. They are facing difficulties to continue study from the very evening.
Moznu Mia, a residential student of Nawab Abdul Latif hall said, “I can’t enter my room after evening. Everyday I set fire on mosquito coil and wait for about 30 minutes outside the room to make room mosquito free. This is not end, the whole night needs mosquito-repellent coil to continue study and make sleep sound”.
Jannatun Naima, a female student of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Hall said, “in previous year, frequent sprays had been conducted all over the campus but not a single spray has been conducted in this year to make campus free from mosquito. The authorities aren’t paying heed to student’s sufferings”.
A teacher who lives on campus said, we are facing various problems due to mosquito attack. It is impossible to study for long hours without using mosquito-repellent coils.
He urged the authorities to take action for resolving the problems soon.
