S.A.Shofiee, Sylhet :As the menace of mosquito in Sylhet city has been increasing alarmingly. The city people are suffering from biting of mosquito at night and even at day. People are not getting rid of mosquito menace even by burning mosquito coils, aerosol and incense. They complained, SCC authority was paying no heed and remained completely indifferent to solve the mosquito problem. According to environmentalists, mosquito starts reproducing from the month of October. With the starting of reproduction season, the mosquito borne diseases are spread among people. If people are not careful from mosquito’ bites during this time, they may catch by diseases like dengue, malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases.Hanifur Rahman, Chief Conservation Officer of SCC informed, mosquito has suddenly increased in the city and the eradication programme will begin within a week.A source informed, the shortage of deterrent that kills mosquito is the reason for not starting the eradication programme by SCC.The source further said, not cleaning the drains and canals of the city for a long time resulted in accumulation of garbage and rotten-mud there caused mosquito to breed menacingly. As a result, citizens are very unhappy with SCC for not doing anything to eradicate mosquito.Students are also in a tough position because of mosquito biting and it is hampering their studies. Not only humans but the pets and domestic animals are also suffering from mosquito problems. Kids, elderly people and hospital patients are in most vulnerable condition for mosquito menace.Another source of SCC informed, shortage of fogger machines used to eradicate flying mosquitoes is the main reason for the failure of starting the ‘Crash Programme’ to eradicate mosquito. It is learnt, only 25 per cent of the required fogger machines are usable.Though most of the mosquito eradication programme is centrally operated by the SCC, the growth of mosquito larva and egg is eradicated by the Councillors of concerned wards.
