Hundreds of city dwellers, mostly women and children, swarmed Mirpur Zoo, parks and museum during the Eid-ul-Azha holidays for getting recreation.
As the capital city has no specific recreation centres, people have chosen the above spots to pass some time.
This year, most of the visitors flocked to the Sangsad Bhaban area, Chandrima Uddyan, Ramna Park, Suhrawardi Uddyan, National Museum at Shahbagh, Mirpur Zoo, Botanical Garden, Baldha Garden, Rabindra Sarabor, Fantasy Kingdom, Nandan Park at Ashulia, Children’s Parks at Shyamoli and Shahbagh.
Besides, the Air Force Museum, the Military Museum and Bangabandhu Novo Theatre at Bijoy Sarani and its adjacent areas have also drew huge spectators during Eid holidays.
Officials said, Mirpur Zoo earned record revenues this year as over two lakh people visited the park during the Eid holidays. “The environment inside the zoo improved much. The zoo authorities imported a number of new animals which attracted the huge crowd,” said on-duty official Abul Kalam on Sunday.
The adjacent Botanical Garden also witnessed a large number of visitors. It draws those people only who love nature and have thirst for knowledge.
Like the previous years, the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban Chattar, the Crescent Lake and the Chandrima Uddyan were no less eye-catching this year too. But insufficient light at Crescent Lake, Chandrima Uddyan and its surrounding areas have discouraged holiday makers to stay in the area after the evening.
“People come here to have the glimpse of the marvelous design of the Sangsad Bhaban. Moreover, a large open space almost free of polluted environment and the strong security are the two other sources of large arrival of visitors,” said an official of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
There is no doubt that the two children’s parks at Shahbagh and Shyamoli were humming with kids’ murmur. The city needs more parks like these, said a visitor.
A long-queue of people, mostly women and children, was seen to buy tickets for entering the National Museum. Sometimes, the queue touches Shahbagh intersection. “There are many sources of knowledge in the museum,” ticket seller Mohammad Arif said, adding, “The rush of crowd exceeds by five to six times during Eid festival.”
“A huge number of visitors, from all walks of life, come to the Ramna Park every day round the year. This number outclasses during the Eid holidays. This year, the number of visitors was more than expectation due to the autumn. Besides, the security measures taken by the law enforcing agencies also inspired the holiday makers,” said a senior official of DCC South, adding that the adjacent Suhrawardi Uddyan also drew a large number of the city residents.
However, many people have expressed their dismay and frustration at the apathy of the government to build more recreation centres.
