Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday said that more probe bodies would be formed in case of need for investigation into the incident in which Siddiqur Rahman has almost lost his eye sight after tear gas shell struck his face.
“We deeply mourn the incident. Police have formed a committee to investigate the matter. We will form a second committee in case the first committee fails to provide a satisfactory report,” he told reporters while addressing a press briefing
in his secretariat office on Tuesday afternoon. “Traffic across Dhaka comes to a standstill whenever the Shahbagh inter-section is blocked. We have ordered police to keep it clear,” Khan said.
Meanwhile, a new video has narrowed speculations about what happened to Siddiqur that day at Shahbagh. The video shows Siddiqur falling on the ground after police lobbed a gas canister from close range.
Police said, they smell sabotage in the injury. Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque and DMP Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia have issued statements in this regard.
They said, one tear gas canister cannot do such damage to both eyes “without hurting the nose”.
They said that they were unsure if the teargas shell caused the damage. Nevertheless the matter would be probed and those responsible would be brought to book.
Siddiqur has already lost his right eye and is having intermittent vision in his left eye.
He was hurt during police action on students of seven government-run colleges, who were demonstrating at Shahbagh demanding immediate examination schedules – fearing a study backlog.
