City Desk :
The National Institute of Kidney Diseases and Urology (NIKDU) will soon provide more poor patients with cheaper dialysis service, official at the Health Ministry said.
“The service will be provided under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) with Indian healthcare company Sandor Medicaids”, Additional Secretary of the Health Ministry M Habibur Rahman Khan told.
Hyderabad-based Sandor Medicaids manufactures and markets high-tech biomedical and biotechnology products.
Khan said the company under PPP has already installed 15 dialysis machines at NIKDU and 40 in Chittagong Medical College and Hospital where poor patients are getting cheaper dialysis service.
“We are now awaiting 45 more machines to be installed at NIKDU,” the official said, adding that the managing director of Sandor Medicaids would come here soon to install the dialysis machines those already arrived in the capital city.
He said the service under PPP would offer access to highly advanced dialysis facility to more poor patients at a subsidized cost. For instance, Khan said the average cost of per dialysis at private hospitals is around Taka 3,000 while an underprivileged patient at the NIKDU pays only Taka 400 for even a better service.
He, however, noted that the actual cost for the dialysis at the NIKDU is Taka 2,190. The government provides a subsidy of Taka 1,790 per dialysis to poor patients.
“The government would further expand the service under PPP at district level so rural people can have modern dialysis facilities without coming to the capital city,” Khan said.
NIKDU Director Professor Nurul Huda Lenin said the number of diabetes and high blood pressure affected patients are rising in the country for various reasons, including bad food habit and uncontrolled lifestyle. Many of the patients at some stage get kidney disease.
According to Bangladesh Kidney Foundation, over one crore people are now suffering from kidney disease in the country. Nearly 1.60 lakh kidney patients, who are in serious condition, have to undergo regular dialysis in every week.
“Dialysis or kidney replacement is the only means of survival if kidney becomes fully non-functional. A kidney patient can lead normal life for 5 to 15 years through regular dialysis”, said Professor Harun Ur Rashid, President of Bangladesh Kidney Foundation.
Dialysis is an artificial process of eliminating waste (diffusion) and unwanted water (ultra filtration) from the blood. People with failed kidneys need to carry out dialysis regularly.
