Speakers at a discussion held on Tuesday underlined the importance to improve relations between Bangladesh and India with a view to build prosperous future for the two countries.
A good relation prevails between the two countries since 1971, the year of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. It should be increased in future, they said.
The speakers said this at a discussion on “Bangladesh-India Friendship and Regional
Security of the Sub-Continent” held at CIRDAP auditorium on Tuesday to mark the 45th anniversary of diplomatic recognition from India to Bangladesh.
Ekattorer Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee and Forum for Secular Bangladesh and Trial of War Criminals of 1971 jointly organised the programme.
Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali was present at the programme as the chief guest, while Adviser to Ekattorer Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee (EGDNC) Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik presided over it.
Executive President of the EGDNC Shahriar Kabir presented the keynote paper, while Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Colonel (Rtd) Abu Islam Chowdhury, Major General (Rtd) Helal Morshed Khan (Bir Bikrom), Meghna Guhathakurta and Dr. Nuzhat Chowdhury spoke at the programme.
Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali recalled the contributions of India during the nine-month long Liberation War of Bangladesh.
“India provided unconditional supports to Bangladesh. Many Indian soldiers cooperated us with arms and they dedicated their lives for our Independence. About one crore refugee got shelter to India. India supported the newly elected government of Bangladesh and tried to free Bangabandhu from Pakistan jail. It would have been delayed if the India did not support us,” the Foreign Minister said.
“Bangladesh awarded the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi “Bangladesh Liberation War Honour Award”, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee “Friends of Bangladesh Liberation War Award” and President Pranab Mukherjee “Bangladesh Muktijuddho Sanmanona” (Liberation War Award) for their contribution during the Liberation War,” he said.
Harsh Vardhan Shringla said the people of the two countries fought against the Pakistani occupation forces led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Indira Gandhi. Ultimately Bangladesh got the independence.
“The good relations between the two countries prevail. It also reflects the spirit of 1971. Such relation would continue in future,” he said.
“The issues of land and maritime boundary were pending for decades. But recently these issues have been resolved,” Harsh Vardhan Shringla said.
