The leaders of different social organisations on Wednesday demanded monitoring system to stop taking of extra fare from passengers in the public transports across the country, especially in the capital city.
They also demanded legal action against those who were taking extra fare from the passengers forcibly.
They said this at a human chain held in front of the National Press Club protesting the harassment of the passengers centering the bus fare.
The human chain was organised under the banner of Paribesh Bachao Andolon (Paba), Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust, Pallima Green, Nagorik Odhikar Songrakkhan Forum, Einer Pathshala, Paribesh Unnoyan Society, BCAERD and Marshal Art Foundation.
The leaders of the organisations said, there is no rule in the public vehicles. The drivers and conductors of the vehicles take extra fare, even sometime it is double of the actual fare. Some one protests, but most of the passengers are helpless, they said.
“Most of the vehicle conductors take extra fare whimsically. There is no fare chart in the vehicles. Some vehicles have chart but not original. The concerned authorities are also silent here. We don’t know why the government does not take any initiative to resolve such problem,” they said.
“The transport workers have no respect for the law of the country. That is why they called strike the moment a mobile court gave punishment to a fake driver. They want that they cannot be quizzed,” organisers said.
Executive General Secretary of Paba Engineer Abdus Subhan and President of Paribesh Unnoyan Society Borhanuddin, among others were present at the programme.
