Staff Reporter :
Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon on Monday said that in the name of rice import money has been laundered abroad by showing rice price twice.
“The farmers cannot be getting exact paddy prices. The blaze on the paddy fields is the expose of the emotion of the farmers. They are the victims of deprivation. Corruption exists here,” he said.
Menon said this at a discussion meeting titled ‘Demanding a clear commitment to the upcoming national budget to stop corruption, loan defaulting and anarchy on banking sector’ at Jatiya Press club.
He said, nobody wants to set fire their own belongings. But now the farmers are helpless. They have produced surplus paddy, but they could not sold it. Even though, the mill owners do not buy the paddy. They (mill owners) had bought Aman paddy, which they could not sell, because of import of rice. Whereas we have surplus of 30 lakh tonnes rice, but then we have imported 60 lakh tonnes.
Menon said, we have shouted that impose tax on rice import. We have discussed it at the cabinet meeting. Prime Minister tried to impose tax on rice import, but it has been disappear.
The Workers Party President said, certainly I can say, corruption happened on
this issue. Whereas worldwide each tonne of rice is sold at 400 dollars, there we bought it 700-1000 dollars.
Menon further said, if government takes initiatives to buy paddy directly from the farmers it will benefit them. In 1996, government had taken steps to bought paddy from the farmers lead by a magistrate, now it is possible to apply.
He also talked about the stock market and said, stock market helps the country’s economy to stand strong basement. But a criminal group does not want to a healthy stock market in the country.
Some anonymous institutions operate their market activities in the stock market whose are the main culprits to make indiscipline situation in the stock market.
