Mohsen Ara Begum Trust Fund at DU

A new trust fund titled ‘Mohsen Ara Begum Trust Fund’ has been established at the department of Islamic History and Culture of Dhaka University (DU). Dr Jonaid Shafiq, the eldest son of Mohsen Ara Begum handed over a cheque for Tk. 20 lac to DU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman on Tuesday at the Vice-Chancellor’s office to set up this trust fund.
Out of the income of this trust fund, every year a memorial lecture will be arranged and scholarship will be given to the students of DU Islamic History and Culture Department.
Presided over by Departmental Chairman Prof Dr Md. Ataur Rahman Miazi the function was attended by senior teachers of the Department including Prof Dr Mohammad Ibrahim, Prof Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan, Proctor of the University Prof Dr AKM Golam Rabbani and family members of Mohsen Ara Begum- Nurunnahar Begum, Zohair Shafiq and Prof Farhat Anwar.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman thanked the donors of the trust fund and said, the initiative taken by family members of late Mohsen Ara Begum to perpetuate her memory at DU by setting up this trust fund is an expression of family values. The Vice Chancellor hoped that meritorious and poor students of the university would be benefitted by this kind of initiative.
It may be mentioned that Mohsen Ara Begum was a student of DU Islamic History and Culture Department in 1950s. Later she served as professor of government college and Deputy Secretary of the Government.
