Moheshkhali power project cost raised

The infrastructure development cost of fast track Matarbarhi power hub project has increased by Tk 1376 crore before getting final approval.
Sources close to the project said, estimated cost of the project was made final in May with Tk 12,556.44 crore. After two months, the estimated cost of the project jumped to Tk 13,932.47 crore, increasing Tk 1376 crore.
Power Development Board (PDB) disclosed at the Development Project Proposal’s (DPP) at the evaluation committee’s recent meeting that 5880 acres of land have to be developed for installation of 20 power plants to generate around 13560MW electricity. Matarbarhi power hub project is located at Moheshkhali Upazila of Cox’s Bazar district. The total project area will be divided in nine blocks.
Land development, building a port, sea channel dredging, town protection embankment, soil filling and roads are to be developed to build coal and LNG fired combined cycle power plants there.
PDB informed the meeting that about Tk 13932 crore will be spent to do the work. Of them, PDB will provide Tk 1042 crore from own fund, GoB will give Tk 1758 crore and rest Tk 11132 crore will be collected from foreign donors.
PDB Chairman Engineer Khaled Mahmud told the reporter that project cost would go up due to revised DPP and add some new plans there.
The revised DPP will be sent to Economic Relation Division (ERD) and Planning Commission after getting approval from Power Division, he said.
First prepared DPP was sent to ERD and Planning Commission in September last. For getting oversees loan, different government agencies are working to complete the implementation of the project by 2021, sources said.
German consultancy firm GmbH has designed Matarbarhi power hub development master plan.
According to the plan, besides power plant project, luxurious urban area will also be developed for accommodation of local and foreign technical experts and for commercial using.
