Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited won the battle of prestige as they beat their arch-rival Abahani Limited by a solitary goal in the second phase of Nitol- Tata Bangladesh Premier Football League held on Sunday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
In the day’s match, Abahani’s Portuguese forward Leonildo Suares failed put his team ahead in the 10th minute after Ghanaian forward Osie Morrison managed to make his way in the left flank and chipped the ball to Suares at the top of the six yard box, but Suares headed the ball over the crosspiece.
Three minutes later Abahani midfielder Jamal Hossain’s fierce left footer was saved by Mohammedan goalie Titumir who punched the ball to safety.
However, Mohammedan took the lead in the 42nd minute as Hardy Pinto, the Portuguese forward danced down the right flank and lobbed the ball to Wahed who beat Abahani goalie Shahidul Alam Sohel with a delicate chip (1-0).
Abahani piled up pressure after the resumption but Mohammedan’s defensive approach restricted their attacking aspirations.
Most of the actions in the second half were centered in the midfield with Abahani concentrated inserting two attackers in winger Touhidul Alam and forward Sohel Rana, but failed to force any impact.
Wahed now has scored in the three consecutive matches with the stint starting against Uttar Baridhara, Team BJMC.
The black and white Motijheel ‘outfit’ Mohammedan took their tally to 23 points from 13 matches while Abahani remained on their previous collection of 23 from the same number of matches.
