Human Rights Day observed

The International Human Rights Day was observed in the country on Thursday as elsewhere across the globe.
The UN General Assembly proclaimed December 10 as Human Rights Day in 1950 with a view to bringing to the attention ‘of the peoples of the world’ the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.
The theme of this year’s day was: ‘Our Rights, Our Freedom. Always’. Various rights groups observed the day with elaborate programmes, including discussion, rally and human chain.
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) organised a seminar at Abdul Karim Sahitya Bisharad auditorium of Bangla Academy in the city on the occasion.
Chaired by NHRC Chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman, the seminar was addressed, among others, by executive director of Ain O Salish Kendra Sultana Kamal, cultural personality Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu and Khaled Mahmud.
Dhaka University Law Department lecturer Rokeya Chowdhury read out the keynote paper at the seminar.
In his speech, the NHRC chief said freedom of speech and freedom of expression is good but too much of freedom is not good. “Time has come to think about it,” he said.
He, however, sad the freedom of expression should not be curtailed. “We have to be careful so that no situation is created to reduce our liberty. The state has to perform its responsibility in this regard,” he added.
Noting that security is the main concern among the country’s people, the NHRC chairman said if people do not feel secure, the country can never be a safe place.
Bangladesh Human Rights Council (BHRCL) brought out brought out a procession from the Central Shaheed Minar in the morning which ended with a gathering in front of the Jatiya Press Club. Speakers at a rally here on Thursday underscored the need for protecting the basic human rights of all citizens of the country.
Over 1000 members of different human rights organisations from across the country took part in the procession, led by Dr Farid, with various colourful banners and festoons.
The organisations include Bangladesh Human Rights Commission, Bangladesh Civil Rights Society (BCRS), Federation of Bangladesh Human Rights Organizations (FBHRO), Bureau of Human Rights Bangladesh (BHRB), SHAREE and Center for Human Rights Movement (CHRM).
