Authorities of Dhanmondi Ideal College smashed around 500 mobile phone sets of their students and later burnt them for allegedly violating rules.
A section of students raised the allegation on Saturday saying that their teachers seized their phone sets for bringing them in class and later burnt after smashing them.
But the college’s principal Jasim Uddin claimed that the allegation the students have brought against the authority is not true.
Refuting the claim of burning around 500 mobile sets, he said, several mobile sets were seized and later burnt in violation of rules.
“There is a ban on using mobile sets in college. Some students bring mobile sets with them in class flouting the ban. That’s why, a disciplinary measure has been taken against them,” Jasim Uddin added.
An anonymous student told The New Nation that they carried mobile phones in class on Saturday. Later, teachers seized their phones and told them their phones will be returned after their classes. But teachers didn’t give the phones back and burnt them away.
When contacted, Dr Harun-ur-Rashid, Inspector of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board said, the college authorities should not destroy students’ phones for violating college code.
“It is an untoward incident. If the students lodge a written complaint, we will launch a probe,” he added.
