Less than two months into losing the job as the Home Minister, Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir, MP suffered an unexpected humiliation in Kachua upazila on Thursday as shoes were thrown at him at a religious function.
Witnesses said MK Alamgir went to attend the akheri munajat (last prayers) of a two-day annual waj mahfil at Ujani Jamia Islamia Ibrahima Madrasah ground around 4:30pm.
Musallis (devotees) present at the waj mahfil hurled abuses at him while he was embarking on the podium through the north gate of the field.
And as soon as he entered the stage, the angry musallis threw shoes and brick chips at him, said the witnesses.
As the situation went out of control, policemen and members of the programme management committee took MK Alamgir away from the podium and escorted him to his vehicle, said officer-in-charge of Kachua Police Station Alamgir Hossian Majumder.
However, the unruly musallis threw brick chunks at the motorcade of the former home minister, leaving 4-5 people injured and three vehicles partially damaged, he said.
Meanwhile, MK Alamgir escaped the attack unhurt.
Later, police fired 13 shots in the air to bring the situation under control.
