Misuse of BSMMU hospital facilities

THE New Nation on Sunday reported that employees of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital are selling the hospital facilities; which they are entitled to making cash of their benefit for treatment and other diagnostic services. As a matter of fact BSMMU Hospital offers such facilities to employees and their family members for check-up, doctors attendance, X-ray, Ultrasonogram, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), scanning etc. They can enjoy such facilities by rotation of one in every three patients which otherwise suggests that hospital employees are holding control over 25 percent of the facilities for their own use. Why the management is so generous and why it is not checking the misuse of the facilities are most pertinent questions.

The New Nation reported quoting other patients that selling of these facilities by many employees at BSMMU Hospital has been creating great suffering to other patients. They sell their facilities to the patients coming from outside the city. In these cases the employees introduce the patients as their relatives to give them the chance of early entrance and diagnostic facilities in exchange of money. There are also allegations hospital employees create influence for bed and cabin allotments as it brings them hefty cash benefit.

What is outrageous is that when patients suffer due to shortage of hospital beds, the employees make cash of such facilities selling their entitlement to some one at the end of the long waiting list or in the queue at outdoor treatment facility. They are using the facility on commercial purpose creating trouble to others. It makes the patients to suffer in two ways. Firstly, genuine patients’ entry delayed for getting services and secondly as the employees get busy with searching buyers of their facilities, they are evading routine duty and treatment of some other patients.

Being the most prestigious public hospital in the country BSMMU Hospital shows otherwise it is a den of corruption and misuse of facilities at all levels. It is no secret that such irregularities are taking place under the nose of the hospital management but why it is not disciplining them is the big question. We know that politicization is in its peak in the Health Sector and its medical institutions and doctors and technicians are so well organized to take undue benefits and protect their interest that nobody will attempt to interfere in others domain of interest. So every body is going unchallenged and nobody is accountable to any other authorities. In our view the situation is terrible there and it can’t go this way.
