Miseries of 12 lakh island dwellers mounts

The utter sufferings of 12 dwellers of Hatiya and Sandwip island mount woe. Sea journey is the only way of going homes of the 12 lakh dwellers of these two islands nearest to Chittagong.
Only two BIWTC ships are engaged in transporting the dwellers to and from Chittagong and these passenger ships ply 3 days in a week. Moreover, these ships carry passengers and cargo by three times more than the approved capacity . Due to excess loading, some times, these ships become inoperative at middle of the journey and faces utter miseries by the passengers .BIWTC, Chittagong sources said MV Abdul Matin and MV Monirul Hoque departs Chittagong on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday for Sandwip & Hatiya and vice versa in a week. Beside these two oceangoing passenger ships, a number of engine boat ply in this route taking high risk of life without any route permit as a result frequent accident of engine boats are happened.
While contacted the station manager of BIWTC, Chittagsong Nasiruddin Chowdhury told that these two old ships are running with snail pace . He said before 2008, there are 5 ships in these route and gradually three ships stopped their services and no replacement given against these three ships. Now only two old aged ships are running.
 While contacted with the passengers of these two islands at Sadarghat terminal , they demanded ship service every day . Lack of adequate ships in these route, engine boats, fishery boats are plying in this route with utter risks with advantage of monitory gains .
A sources said in 9 months of the current year, 11 engine boats met with fatal accident in this route left 47 passengers died. The conscious quarters demand introduction of ocean going ship service towards Sandwip and Hatiya every day banning plying of engine boats/fishery boat to save the lives of the home goers.
