Unidentified miscreant tried to set fire at the office of local daily Desh-Janopad in the city early Thursday.
SM Rafikul Islam, executive editor and head of news of the newspaper, said the office situated at ground floor of a rented building in Fakirbari Road area of the city.
Md. Bayezid, computer operator after work was sleeping inside the room and pester Sakib locking the door went to press for printing.
Suddenly owner of the house Md. Asad at 3:30 AM Thursday smelling smoke and flame saw the fire from the upstairs and with the help of others succeeded to extinguish that, Rafik told.
Frame of the door and signboard of the office damaged and local people becoming aware extinguished the flame before major damages, said the executive editor of the paper.
Sub Inspector Samiron of Kotwali police station, said he visited the spot on Thursday morning and found an empty bottle with smells of petrol. Primarily it was assumed that some one tried to set fire there.
The panaflex of the signboard of office burnt and frame of the door damaged in the incident.
A case would be lodged in this connection, the executive editor of the newspaper told.
