Unidentified miscreants cut down over two thousand betel leaf plants at Gandhai punjee (village) under Barlekha Upazila of Moulvibazar district on Monday night.
On the information, 70-80 criminals attacked Gandhai punjee betel leaf plants. This time criminals cut down two thousand betel plant of punjee.
While visiting the spot on Wednesday in Gandhai punjee people told this correspondent that the criminals cut two thousand betel plants (10 to 15 feet in height) .
Rajesh Posna, head of Gandhai punjee said, an unidentified gang demanded Tk 5 lakh from me over mobile phone on 27th February but I didn’t send money immediately. Later, unidentified criminals cut around two thousand betel plants worth tk 20 lakh.
Locals demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the persons involved in such heinous act, he added.
Father Joseph Gomes, central committee member of BAPA confirmed the matter to The New Nation. He added that the betel leaf gardens were the only source of income of the Khasi.
