Mirza Abbas’s corruption case to continue

The High Court (HC) on Monday rejected a revision petition filed by BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas seeking cancelation of a corruption case filed against him.
At the same time, the HC had withdrawn the
stay order from the trial proceedings of the case and ordered the lower court to complete the trial within six months.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice K M Hafizul Alam delivered the verdict after hearing the revision petition.
Advocate Zainul Abedin appeared in the court on behalf of Mirza Abbas, while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan represented the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and Deputy Attornery General A K M Amin Uddin Manik stood for the State.
Mirza Abbas filed the revision petition on December 8, 2016, to cancel the case filed against him. The HC issued a rule on December 14, 2016, upon the government to explain as to why the case filed against Mirza Abbas should not be scrapped and the HC stayed the case proceedings.
ACC Deputy Director Joton Kumar Roy filed the case with the Shahbagh Police Station on March 6, 2014 against former State Minister of Housing Alamgir Kabir and three others on charge of allotting plot to the Dhaka Union of Journalists Cooperative Society Limited at a lower price than the market price during his tenure (2001-2006) at the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. But, Mirza Abbas’s name was not mentioned in the case then.
Later, ACC Deputy Director Hamidul Hasan submitted the charge-sheet in the court on February 11, 2015, against five persons including Mirza Abbas.
