The High Court (HC) on Sunday granted anticipatory bail to BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas for eight weeks in three cases filed with Paltan Police Station.
The HC Bench of Justice Rezaul Haque and Justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order after hearing on two separate bail petitions filed by them.
Advocate Zainul Abedin, Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan and Barrister A K M Ehsanur Rahman appeared in the court on behalf of Mirza Abbas and Afroza Abbas, while Additional Attorney General Momtazuddin Fakir stood for the State.
Barrister Ehsanur Rahman said, “The High Court granted anticipatory bail to Mirza Abbas and Afroza Abbas for eight weeks. They will have to surrender to the Metropolitan Magistrate Court after this time.”
To secure bail, Mirza Abbas and Afroza Abbas came to Supreme Court early on Sunday and were waiting at the Supreme Court Bar Association President’s room. They were present in the court during hearing.
Violence broke out in front of the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan between police and the BNP supporters on last Wednesday during the sale of nomination forms ahead of the next Parliamentary election scheduled to be held on December 30. Two police cars were set ablaze and many vehicles were vandalised.
Several helmetwearing individuals were seen on the spot vandalising and torching vehicles. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader blamed BNP leader Mirza Abbas for the clashes. Police have filed three cases in connection with the incident against BNP leaders, including Abbas and Afroza Abbas.
The court granted police a five-day remand to question detained BNP leader Nipun Roy Chowdhury in one case.
About 200 people were accused in the cases, include BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, BNP Vice-Chairman Akhtaruzzaman, its Jatrabari unit chief Nabiullah Nabi and Kafil Uddin, a member of the BNP Chief’s Advisory Council.
