Mirpur Model Police Station’s Sub-Inspector Zahidur Rahman Khan has been arrested on charge of killing trader Mahbubur Rahman Sujan, 36, on July 13.
He was taken into custody from city’s Rajarbagh Police Lines on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Mirpur Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Salahuddin Ahmed said that jhut (garment scarp) trader Sujan was picked up from his residence at Mohammdpur’s Shankar on the fateful day by a team of Mirpur police led by SI Jahidur Rahman.
He was allegedly walloped in his own house, inside the police van and in the police station overnight and subsequently died in police custody the following morning, the police official said.
Sources said that victim’s family planned to file three cases, including one for murder, accusing SI Jahidur of torturing Sujan to death.
Dhaka Medical College and Hospital’s (DMCH) Morgue sources said that multiple injuries in Sujan’s head, hands and other parts of his body caused his death, giving substantial grounds to his family’s claim that he was tortured to death.
Sujan’s widow wife Momtaz Sultana Lucy claimed that Sujan was allegedly tortured to death by police who took him into custody at Mirpur police station.
Momtaz calimed that the men in uniform reportedly went to Sujan’s house to extort money from him.
She added that the Mirpur OC had forced her to sign a blank sheet of paper on Sunday morning.
Deputy Commissioner (Mirpur Division) Imtiaz Ahmed said that Sujan was allegedly tortured to death by SI Zahidur Rahman who took him into custody at Mirpur police station in the capital, hours after he had been detained along with his wife and son.
Zahidur was suspended at Rajarbagh Police Lines as part of the primary punitive measures against him for the death of the trader, the DC said.
