The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) demanded action against two ministers for their comments about Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha.
The bar association leaders at a press conference at its auditorium urged the government to take action against Food Minister Qamrul Islam and Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque for their recent comments on the Chief Justice as they said the ministers breached their oath and violated the constitution with their comments.
“The comments of the two ministers about an under-trial case are a threat to the judiciary. The government is conspiring to control the judiciary. These comments are like a blow to the highest court. I hope the highest court will take action in this regard, or else, people will lose their confidence in it,” said SCBA president Khandker Mahbub Hossain reading out a written statement at the press conference.
Replying to a question he said, “We know they’ve breached their oath and violated the constitution. I hope the government will take action against them.”
On Saturday, the two ministers at a roundtable discussion organised by Ekatorrer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee criticised the Chief Justice for his reported remarks that “the prosecution is doing politics with the trial of condemned war criminal and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali.”
Earlier, during the hearing of arguments on Mir Quasem Ali’s death row review petition on February 23, the Chief Justice purportedly expressed dissatisfaction over the activities of the prosecution and the investigation agency.
