Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam B.Sc. on Tuesday asked the officials of labour wing to work intensely to expand country’s manpower market broad. The labour wing officials need to work more speed and efficiency in view of the emergence of new challenges to protect the growing number of workers, he said speaking at the inaugural function of a three-day training programme for labour wing officials at Probashi Kalyan Bhaban at Eskaton in the city.
Presided over by Secretary-in-Charge of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry Begum Shamsun Nahar, the function was also addressed by Additional Secretary Azharul Huq, Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training Director General M Selim Reza and Wage Earners Welfare Board Director General Gazi Mohammad Julhash, said an official release.
The minister said the amount of remittances sent by expatriate workers is equal to 13 percent of GDP.
To sustain this contribution, the labour wing officials would have to make field visits regularly to create demands for more workers, he added. Nurul Islam said the officials would have to work to protect interest of expatriate workers and resolve their problems. He urged the officials to make sure that the expatriate workers sent remittances through the banking channel.
