UNB, Dhaka :
The High Court on Monday granted regular bail to Mahtabuddin Chowdhury alias Minar Chowdhury, the lone accused in the murder of Ekramul Hoque, upazila chairman of Fulgazi in Feni district.
An HC division bench, comprising Justice MA Hafiz and Justice M Ruhul Quddus, delivered the judgment making its rule absolute after the final hearing.
On May 20 last year, Ekram, 45, also president of Fulgazi upazila unit Awami League, was shot and burned to death in his car by miscreants in Feni town.
A case was filed with Feni Sadar Police Station accusing Minar Chowdhury, a local BNP leader, as the prime suspect, and 35 others of killing Ekram.
A week after the killing, Detective Branch of Police on May 27 last year arrested Minar Chowdhury from the capital.
Earlier, the HC had granted Minar Chowdhury bail for six weeks while issuing a rule asking the government to explain why the accused should not be granted regular bail.
Following the HC order, Minar Chowdhury was released from jail on July 17 last year.
Later, the chamber Judge of the Appellate Division staying the HC interim bail order asked the accused to surrender to the trial court. The trial court sent Minar Chowdhury to jail on his surrender before it.
Now the accused has been undergoing treatment at the city’s BIRDEM prison cell.
Emerging from the court, deputy attorney general Masud Hassan Chowdhury told reporters that the state would appeal with the SC against the HC order. Barrister Moudud Ahmed and Advocate ZI Khan Panna appeared for Minar Chowdhury.
