Some 1621 people have entered the list of millionaires in Bangladesh over the last three months, says a Bangladesh Bank report.
According to the latest central bank data, at the end of March in 2022, the number of millionaire bank account holders in the country has increased to 1,03,597 people. In the last three months, the number of millionaire account holders in the country has increased to 1621.
Earlier, at the end of December 2021, the number of millionaire account holders in the country was 1,01,976. As a result, the number of millionaire account holders (individuals and institutions) has increased to 1621 in three months, said the data.
A B Mirza Azizul Islam, an economist and also a former Advisor to the Caretaker Government, said, “Billions of taka are being laundered out of the country every year. If it was stopped, the number of millionaire depositors would increase more. Even then I will say that this money is being deposited in the bank without being smuggled, which is very promising news.”
He further said, “On the one hand, the number of poor people in the country is increasing and on the other hand, the number of millionaires is increasing. Income inequality is being created among the people by increasing the number of millionaires in the country. This seems to be an ominous sign.”
