Military confrontation in Ukraine is a real possibility

It is not just President Putin of Russia living under communism for whom weapons are more important than the people. In fact such governments need weapons to suppress the people and survive.

Arms race in communism is unavoidable. Russia is anxious to demonstrate its military strength to establish its superpower status. Armed clashes are inevitable between the Western democracies and Russia. When and where the Western countries will show their might is a matter to be kept in mind. Sanctions will hurt common people but not Putin’s government.

US President Joe Biden is reportedly considering to impose personal sanctions on Vladimir Putin if Russia invades Ukraine. The international media on Wednesday reported that Mr. Biden has also cautioned — there would be “enormous consequences” for the world if Russia made a move on the nation – that’s Ukraine.

This contemplation of direct threat against President Putin is a new challenge and may work. Several European leaders have repeated dire warnings that Russia would pay a heavy price for invasion of Ukraine. Side by side, UK is also seriously thinking about imposing sanctions on Mr. Putin as well as looking to “toughen up” its sanctions on people, banks and businesses.

There is no doubt that if US and UK are agree with sanctions on Moscow then all the European allies will follow them. That means it will be the biggest sanction against any single person in the history. What’s interesting is that Russia has been constantly denying of making any invasion against Ukraine, rather accusing the US and its allies of escalating tensions over the issue.

But the fact is that Moscow has already deployed an estimated 100,000 soldiers along the Ukraine border. Kremlin fears Ukraine could join the Western military alliance NATO, which it thinks a big security threat. Moscow at the same time wants firm guarantee from the US and its allies that they won’t include neighbouring Ukraine and other countries in NATO alliance. Russia wants to expand is cold area of influence.

Now, we see that Ukraine situation gets two aspects. It is likely a NATO expansion or it may appear as Russian aggression. Whatever the actual reason behind the present Ukraine tension may be, the reality is that people of Ukraine are now passing their days in utmost anxiety fearing possible war at any moment.

In a latest development, the diplomats from Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France gathered in Paris on Wednesday for talks where the theme of Western diplomats was that if there is any attack against Ukraine it will be the largest invasion since World War Two.

One thing is clear that USA and its allies are trying to show the world that – they are united against Russia and they’re ready for a collective action. But there is a problem. Moscow presently provides about one-third of the crude oil and gas imported by the European Union. If Russia cuts off the oil and gas pipe lines then it would be certainly very painful for the US allies.

Once Ukraine was an essential part of former USSR regime. After separation, it becomes the second-largest country by area in Europe after Russia. But reality is that, Ukrainian leaders are not interested to keep close relation with Russia and be a socialist country.

The problem with communism is that they cannot accept that a country belongs to its people. President Putin thinks like an emperor and anxious to get back his old empire. This is a great fight to save modern democracies and the free world.
