UNB, Dhaka :
Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque on Thursday said the strength of militants has waned following continuous anti-militant drives of the law enforcement agencies.
However, they are trying to reorganise in some places again, he said, adding that they will be rooted out from the country. The IGP came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after attending the prize giving ceremony of the Annual Sports of Shaheed Police Smriti School and College in the city’s Mirpur area.
“A special anti-militant drive began on March 9 across the country. During the drive, two suspected JMB men were arrested while hurling bombs at police in Comilla and following their confessional statements, the law enforcers conducted drives at separate militant hideouts in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong district,” he said.
Four militants, including a female one, were killed during a special operation at Premtala in Sitakunda upazila on Thursday morning, he added. “At first, police asked the militants to surrender but they hurled grenades to police, prompting the law enforcers to go for the operation. A number of explosive objects were recovered during the drive,” said the IGP. Replying to a query, he said the militants who were arrested during the drives are members of Neo JMB. Responding to another question about the bomb attack on a convoy of prison vans one of which was carrying Mufti Abdul Hannan, the police chief said members of Ansar Al Islam tried to snatch the Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (Huji) chief, a death-row convict. On March 6, two crude bombs were hurled at the prison van convoy carrying Mufti Hannan and some of his associates at Tongi of Gazipur.
