Staff Reporter :Former Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Emajuddin Ahmed has said that the mid-term poll only can resolve the ongoing political impasse. Addressing a memorial meeting on Friday, he also said that the ongoing crisis had been created due to the almost voter-less election of January 5 in 2014. ‘Oli Ahad Smriti Sangsad’ arranged the meeting at the National Press Club in the city on the life and contribution of language veteran Oli Ahad. General secretary of the organisation Barrister Rumen Farhana chaired the meeting while convener of Nagorik Oikya Mahmudur Rahman Manna also delivered lecture, among others.  Emajuddin Ahmed said that the present government organised candidly a voter-less election. Such government can’t establish good-governance. There is no good-governance, even in a single institution in the country. No minister can cite any example. In this situation, mid-term election is needed is a must to end the current political impasse, he added. He urged the political leaders to show willingness for a peaceful solution to the overheated political crisis. “Please, do politics in the interest of the country, and for people’s welfare,” he said. Emajuddin Ahmed expressed his anger for keeping BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in confinement in her office, disconnection of electricity supply and communication service, and stopping of food supply. Such behaviour with a three-time prime minister can’t be accepted, he said. He also criticised the government for continuing extra-judicial killing and asked the government to stop it. The former DU VC recalled the outstanding contribution of Oli Ahad to making the Language Movement successful. Oli Ahad also played vital role in flowrishing democracy in the country, he said. Mahmudur Rahman Manna asked the government to sit in talks with the opposition parties, while he urged the BNP-led 20-party alliance not to observe the blockade programme during the ‘Amar Ekushey’ (February 21). He criticised the ministers of the government for their comment that the government wouldn’t sit for talks with ‘killer’. “You sat with the killers of Army officers during BDR mutiny. You also sat with the Hill Trucks men and the Hefazat-e-Islam. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman also sat with Yahia Khan and Bhutto. Why you can’t do it in this moment?” he said.
