Micro-credit makes 7,000 women self-reliant in Nilphamari

Some 7,000 unemployed, poor and distressed women have achieved self-reliance through various income generation activities (IGAs) ensuring proper utilisation of micro-credit loans and training in Nilphamari district.
The information was disclosed at a blanket distribution ceremony followed by discussion organised by RDRS Bangladesh, an NGO, at its Syedpur office in Nilphamari district on Friday afternoon.
The events were arranged during visit of executive vice-chairman of the Micro-credit Regulatory Authority (MRA) Amalendu Mukherjee there to see IGAs being conducted by the trained women under the NGO’s micro-credit programme.
With Director (Micro Finance) of RDRS Bangladesh Humayun Khaled in the chair, Amalendu Mukherjee distributed 300 blankets among cold-hit people under CSR activities of the NGO, visited its IGAs and addressed the discussion as chief guest.
Chairman of Credit and Development Forum Imranul Haque Chowdhury, its Executive Director Abdul Awal, executive director of Manab Mukti Sangstha Abul Hasnat, executive director of Gram Unnayan Kendra Abdus Salam, attended as special guests.
Amalendu Mukherjee appreciated the micro-credit activities being conducted by RDRS Bangladesh in Nilphamari district where the NGO had so far turned 7,000 unemployed, poor and distressed women self-reliant through various IGAs since 2009.
“The training provided on making mats, quality handcrafts and household goods using bamboo and cane, baskets, ‘Karchupi’, ‘Agar Bati’, various jute products, production of vermin-composts have become effective in creating IGAs to make the women self-reliant,” he said.
He highly lauded the role being played successfully by RDRS Bangladesh in involving the unemployed rural women with micro-credit activities to create opportunities IGAs for them in making them self-reliant side by side with accelerating women empowerment.
Micro-credit coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Arun Chandra Kirtonia, its Programme Coordinator for Nilphamari KM Rashedul Arefeen, Senior Programme Manager (Microcredit) Golam Mostafa also attended the ceremonies.
