The government has floated an international tender for the construction of the country’s first-ever metro rail project (Package-8), aiming to ease the city’s nagging traffic congestion and provide fast public transportation.
“The tender was floated on Saturday to select prospective bidders and one of them would be chosen following the scrutiny of its technical and financial proposals for the job,” Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader told a press briefing at the secretariat on Sunday.
Under the package-8, the minister said, rolling stock, depot equipment and depot rolling stock will be pro
cured at an estimated cost of Tk 3 crore.
Besides, metro rail plants, workshops, operation control centres, electrical buildings, washing plants, a training centre and other establishments will also be constructed under the package.
He said, international tenders for package-7 and package-1 will be floated by February while package-3, 4, 5 and 6 in May 15 and package-2 in October.
The metro rail is expected to be completed by 2019.
The total cost of the project is Tk 21985.07 crore. JAICA (Japan International Corporation Agency) will provide TK 16594.59 crore while the government Tk 5390.48 crore.
The Metro Rail Bill, 2015 was passed in Parliament on January 26 last.
A public limited company, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), will operate the Metro Rail, while the DMTCL will be supervised by the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority.
The proposed route of the MRT Line-6 is Uttara 3rd Phase to Bangladesh Bank via Pallabi-Rokeya Sarani-Khamarbari-Farmgate-Hotel Sonargaon-Shahbagh-TSC-Doel Chattar- and Topkhana Road.
There will be 16 metro rail stations under the project. The stations are Uttara (North), Uttara (Centre), Uttara (South), Pallabi, IMT, Mirpur Section 10, Kazipara, Taltala, Agargaon, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Sonargaon, National Museum, Doel Chattar, Bangabandhu National Stadium and Bangladesh Bank.
