When the demand for electricity is shooting up across the country with the rise in mercury, a fire broke out at Meghnaghat 450 MW combined cycle plant on Monday evening, burning down its 150 MW steam turbine.
Officials at the country’s largest private sector power plant said the incident might have taken place from a mechanical fault triggering a big explosion that forced the authorities to shut its three units.
A three-storey steel structure of the power plant collapsed following the incident, bringing down the power supply at a time when its demand is on the rise due to the heat wave
now sweeping the country.
A fire took place at the country’s largest private power station Meghnaghat 450 MW combined cycle plant-at about 7 pm on Monday that forced all of its three units to shut down. As a result, the total power department had to count a big fall in power generation.
According to officials at the state-owned Power Development Board (PDB), the 150MW steam turbine suffered a serious damage by the fire as it burned down its generator and other equipment.
